Aureal Vortex + Soyo MB (VIA) + AGP = Lock-up?
Problem : When Aureal Vortex 8820 (PCI) soundcard plugged in to Soyo 7VCA-E MB (with VIA) it locks up on startup when sound file is to be played. There are no conflicts showing in device manager during safe mode. It can be fixed when disabling all vortex programs in device manager, but leaves me with no sound. I am also running an AGP video card. I have read at a website (www.vortexofsound.com) that it has something to do with running an AGP video card and a PCI soundcard causes some sort of conflict. I have installed all of the new 4in1 drivers for the VIA chipset, and all the IRQ miniport drivers, and AGP drivers, still not fixing it. Any way to find some sort of fix or any ideas? All video and sound drivers are current also. If any of this is confusing let me know and I will try to explain it more simple.
System:
Motherboard: Soyo 7VCBA-E
PROCESSOR: Intell PIII 866
OS: Win98 SE
Soundcard: Vortex 1 8820 PCI
Video: Nvidia TNT2 64 AGP
Memory: 128
THANK YOU

Didn't I just read this over in the motherboards section?

Try this: When you boot into safe mode, the IRQ's are
set by the motherboard. When in normal mode, Win2K
ACPI assigns them, so they are different. I sounds
to me that you have an IRQ conflict. Go to start settings
control panel system hardward device manager and then
view resources by connection. I'd bet the ranch that
your sound card is sharing an IRQ with something else
(Usually IRQ 9) If you find out how to fix it, tell me!!!!

remove all non essential components and boot up, adding another component each time till you see the canflicting problem.
remove drivers also.
Try booting to safe mode and check for duplicat devices and remove them all reboot and windows will find the right one to install.
Try that first.
I hope that someday we will be able to put away our fears and prejudices and just laugh at people.

I know it sounds simplistic, but what happens if you disable the startup sound, does the lockup still occur?

Not sure if this'll work, but, in your BIOS, try changing the "PCI Latency Timer". There are numerous settings, see which one will work.
Good Luck!

Here's another solution. I just did it for my MX300 Sound card, using reference drivers, and it works great. No more crashing.
