You will need to provide much more detailed information - make, model, etc.
The vendor who sold you this should be your first choice for problem solving - if they said an installation disk didn't come with the XP install, then it HAS to be a manufactured system with a recovery partition. Get some answers from the vendor.

Also I would be looking for and finding the COA on the side or back of the machine.
All legal installs of XP have this COA on them seen here.

Welcome to Windrivers Tina
This is probably an IBM PC... the error means that there is something either wrong with the hard drive, or the pc was sold to you without an operating sytem. Since this is a second hand pc, either scenario is likely.
A call to the person who sold it to you as CCT advised is the best place to start since if it was supplied without an operating system, there is no point in troubleshooting the hardware just yet.
The 1762 message means that each time you start the pc, the hardware settings have changed - this could be as simple as the battery which holds those settings has died so it's telling you it's forgetting each time.
Lastly (and quite likely) when you got it home, a cable inside came loose and so the pc can't connect to the hard drive to find the operating system.
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."
