Welcome to Windrivers 281975
It's possible that you didn't scroll down far enough in disk management to see the drive - since it doesn't have a letter it may be at the very bottom.
Does the drive have data on it already or is it brand new?
What windows are you using and what service pack?
In device manager, double click the usb drive - is there an error message on the lower portion of the general tab? Or does it say the device is working properly?
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."

thanks for your quick reply....
OS: WinXP SP2
the device is having data.
i scrolled checked completely in the "Disk Management" there are only 3 items (2 hard disks and 1 dvd writer)
there is no other device with/without device letter other than the above 3.
In the device manager i double clicked the "diskdrives" -> "WDC ROM Model-SCORPIO-- usb device" -> the device is working properly
I checked all the devices in the "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" all are showing "the device is working properly"
now what to do/
thanks

So you have two hard drives in your computer or is it one drive with two partitions?
Are you on your own machine or does this machine belong to the company you work for?

The company may have a policy against plugging in other drives which prevents you from accessing the drive. You should check with your IT department.

Oh, OK.
Do you have the "special cable"... It sounds like the drive electronics are alive, but isn't spinning up.
Optional Accessories
A special cable may be needed for computers with limited bus power. For more
information in the U.S., visit our Web site at store.westerndigital.com. Outside the
U.S., contact WD Technical Support in your region. For a list of Technical Support
contacts, visit support.wdc.com and see Knowledge Base Answer ID 1048.

Was it working when the Manager gave it away or is that why it was given away ?
If it was working, will it still work on the Managers' computer?

The special Y cable, so you can draw power from two usb slots? Or is it the model with an external power cable?
As you plug it in, put your hand on the drive - do you feel it spin up?

OK, no spin means either a dead drive or not enough power. The cable is free here. You just need to call Western Digital.
