Windows recognises the optical drive, but the BIOS does not!

Trying to install a new optical drive in an old laptop. Windows recognises it, but the BIOS does not!

The laptop is a Mitac 7321 aka Time Evesham Novatech Pico Packard Bell & many more...

I'm attempting to replace a non-working CD drive with a new DVD-ROM drive. When I reboot, the device is showing up as IDE device number 2 (after the hard drive) and it says it's disabled. I want to boot from the cd in order to install an OS!

However when I get into Windows, the drive shows up in My Computer and works fine!

Any ideas? I've not tried a BIOS update yet, but can't see it should be necessary.

Download the manual and read is best I can suggest:

http://mtc.mitacservice.com/MISC/M01...?Region=Global (enter '7321' in the 'key word search' box)

This is a laptop, so it could be connected a number of ways.

Have you reset the bios to defaults? Exit menu "Default Settings"

When you replaced the drive was the battery in or out?

Have you tried removing the battery and the power lead and then starting the laptop and going straight into the bios?

How about turning off quick boot?

    @ NooNoo

connected a number of ways? How do you mean?

And the battery was out, then when I had finished and everything was back together I plugged it in, (without battery) and started it up. I later added the battery.

When you say remove the battery and the power lead, then start it, what should that do? and which one should I add in first, the battery or the power lead? does it make a difference?

As for the BIOS settings, I have yet to try those.

Some laptops use a scsi connection, others use a usb connection and some use an IDE or SATA connection.

The idea is to get the bios to re-evaluate what hardware is attached. Sometimes pressing the power button without any power source can cause this to happen - but it depends on how the laptop has been built.

All your devices? sound, video, usb? if so, you need to read this Getting the hotfix is free. It's just that they must check what is going on before releasing it to you. If you don't want to for whatever reason:

You should also check to see if the plug and play service is started and set to automatic.

You could try reinstalling SP2 again.

Alternatively, slipstream SP2 in to your installation disk and then format and reinstall windows.

As for your other questions... The bios has nothing to do with windows except that windows uses the bios to build the hardware files. It can also change bios settings if the bios is set to plug and play or pnp OS is yes.

The fact that windows can use the CD but the bios can't would suggest that the bios is expecting to see a certain model of optical drive and it isn't there. Perhaps removing the drive and updating the bios would be a good idea if the bios reset didn't work... BTW you didn't say what the results of attempting to reset the bios were.

Hi, ok all my devices are back now. Thanks NooNoo!
My BIOS does not have the PnP setting unfortunately.

I tried resetting the BIOS - no difference!

I'm having some difficulty locating the BIOS update at the moment. It's and Insyde MobilePRO bios.

What did you do to get device manager showing devices?

Is the plug and play service in windows running?

I had no problem finding it from CCT's link here you are

You will need WinRAR to unpack it - comes with the flash program and bios version 1.07

I realised that msconfig was set to boot selectively for some reason. enabled normal startup and it was fine.

    Plug and Play is running.

I see..7zip didnt want to unrar the file so i thought it was corrupt. Found the app now. Thanks!

I'm going to try to flash the bios. might be a while as i want to backup data first.
