Laptop does not see mouse (USB)

I accessed the usb stickey and was going to edit my registry. I found items to delete but when I tried, I received error, To have permission you right
click and go to permission, I did then went to Advanced tab to add me in
for permission. Clicked area to edit, line blinking for letters to write. I could not spell or even just hitting a key like C would not register. Like my keyboard was broke. And it is mounted on laptop. Is there something I missed.

Compaq Presario M2000 with XP home sp2
Mouse is wireless optical Model# MO1717-W

Edit the registry in safe mode. If that doesn't work, what antivirus/antispyware are you running?

This bothers me... do you have spybot teatimer running? Or other registry protection?

Sounds like it died... can you check it on another computer?

I checked it on my desk top. Windows XP is running on it also (Home)
It stated there is a problem with usb device. The mouse is only a month old if that. Time to go back to vender.
