[RESOLVED] DirectX/DirectDraw/Direct3D Error in Windows XP
Okay, this is not my problem, but a problem of one of my friends. (I was also unsure as to where to put this problem) ... anyways,
My friend is having trouble with his computer's graphics (according to him, he believes that DirectX is the source of the problem). His computer will NOT allow a resolution of more than 640x480x16 (source: dxdiag) to be displayed. Further, as he ran a diagnostic on his DirectX software (which he thinks is the cause), the following error came up:
Failure at step 17 (SetDisplayMode to 640x480x16): HRESULT = 0x80004001 (Not implemented). (Source: Dxdiag)
This error, according to him, appeared for all 3 of the components I listed (DirectX, Direct3D, and DirectDraw). What is causing the error, and how do you fix it?

Are all of the drivers installed including chipset and video card?
By the looks of the resolution its stuck at the video drivers are not installed

Okay, here is the computer information:
- Operating System: Windows XP Media Center Edition SP2, Build 2600
- Computer Manufacturer: Dell
- Computer Model: Dimension E510
- Vid Card: ATI Radeon X600
- The chipset drivers seem to be working correctly (please explain how to confirm this)
- Video card came with the computer, and was previously installed by the manufacturer.

If the chipset drivers aren't installed, you're likely to see some yellow exclamation points for some devices in device manager. But it won't hurt just to go to Dell's driver page for this model and download then install the most current chipset and video drivers.

Hello, I am a friend of TrekCaptainUSA. I am also the one who is having this problem. I went to Device Manager and there is no problem related to the drivers. All of the drivers were reinstalled just to make sure this was the problem. Also as far as the resolution changes are concerned, there are times whenever my computer can't change its resolution. Currently, my computer can change its resolution and all of the tests have passed.

As megamanfan3 said, I am his friend, and he is having the problem.
If he says that there are no yellow exclamation points, then there aren't any issues with his chipset drivers...

Two thoughts come to mind, one the video card may be going out. Other thought is that you need to run a scandisk. Just a strange feeling but I have a hunch there may be a corrupt sector on the drive. Do the scandisk first. If that passes then try using a different video card and see if you get the same results.

RE: Video Card of Dell Dimension E510s
If I'm not mistaken, don't most Dell Desktop computers come with an integrated video card built into the motherboard? If that's the case, then the motherboard would have to be replaced in order to replace the video card, correct? (In addition to my computer, I use a Dell Dimension E310 which runs the same version of XP as my friend, and the video card is integrated into the motherboard.)

If it's an integrated video card then installing one will by default disable the built in one. Like I said these are hunches. Tell me what you find though.

Thank you for your information, I'll try a new video card when possible.

This issue, unless otherwise noted later, has been resolved to the best of my knowledge.

I posted another thread in the Windows XP Category. It is a question about the course of action taken by megamanfan3 (my friend), and you can find it here.
