    Lazerus Computer

Hp Pavillion will boot to blank desktop then go direct to shutdown. I have redone this computer three times. Twice I was able to bring it back with the HP System Recover. That lasted 2/3 days. Now it wont do that. I redid it with the XP repair option - that lasted one day
The data is still there, as I have networked and downloaded updates and programs to a download directory and they are still there when I ressurect this Lazerus machine. All the icons for the new programs are there and they work.
It will boot to the user screen - choose owner, it will then "load your personal settings" then it will boot to a blank desktop, then immediatly shut down.
I have installed and run: AVG2008 with the updates - no viruses found
Spybot Search and Destroy - nothing found
    Ad-Aware - nothing found
I have a Hijackthis file - I couldnt find anything, but that could be me.
What could be causing this? A hardware problem? A software problem?
    Hoping you can help.

Well to start since you reloaded a few times and it did it again.
    That almost screams hardware issue.
Since its an HP I would look at the harddrive right off. They used a number of maxtors.Download maxtors testing software and test it.
You might also test the memory while you are at it.

You might want to check the event viewer as well...
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."

Which ones should I be looking at and what would I be looking for? The unit does not start, so I will have to go in from the repair option.
The question is - why would it boot to a blank desktop and then to shutdown.
