keyboard not recognized on boot

i am using an asus p5bvmse motherboard and when the computer boots, the keyboard is not seen.
if i go straight into setup on boot, the keyboard is usable.
i have to restart windows and then the keyboard is usable.

i looked through the bios settings and nothing really jumped out at me.

i just can't remember what i was playing with when this started happening.

any ideas.

Is it a U.S.B. or PS2 keyboard? Are you using a K.V.M.? A quick thought would be to check for legacy devices in the BIOS and be sure that is enabled.

Its most likely USB Legacy under USB configuration enable it

it's a ps2 going through a kvm.

didn't see a bios setting for legacy devices but will look for it.

was thinking that the fitst thing i should try is another keyboard to rule out a keyboard issue.
will try that too.

i changed keyboards.
no change.

i went into the bios and changed a legacy usb setting and a ps2 mouse setting from auto to enabled.
no change.

when i reboot, i can see when windows initializes the keyboard because all 3 lights flash.
doesn't happen the on the first boot.

so now, maybe it's a windows timing issue or something?

Prolly the chipset and the KVM. We bought new KVM's and the issue went away. One note, with KVM's sometimes it takes 2 or 3 minutes for the KB to be found. Give it a few minutes and see if it works.

If the KVM switch supports an OPTIONAL power adapter, try using one.

have been using the kvm for about 3 yrs with no problems.
it is connected to a power supply.

guess i have to live with a reboot every time i turn it on.
sigh.

Ummm devices break down after time. Saying its worked perfect for a few years means absolutely zero.
It's like the toaster ,today it works perfect and tomorrow I have to turn it up more to get what I want till one day it doesn't toast at all.
It means electrically its breaking down and that could very well be the problem.
Try another KMV

you guys were right regarding the kvm.
connecting the keyboard directly to the motherboard resolved the issue.

so it probably is a timing issue between the kvm and the chipset.
will try to get another kvm and see if that resolves the problem.

just wouldn't have thought of that.
the keyboard works just fine when navigating the bios so i couldn't understand why windows doesn't see it until a reboot.

a new thing to think about.........
