Unable to boot into XP professional..stops at NTFS.sys

I have am using a Dell Dimension 2400 with xp on it. It will not boot into any of the choices available...ie safe mode, safe mode with command prompt..with vga etc., etc.
It stops continually at ntfs.sys on all choices.
When I boot from an xp cdrom and go to recovery console and it goes to c:\windows as the directory to run from it restarts !
    Anyone have a clue..would greatly appreciate it...thanks.

RESOLVED. I don't know how to close this out.
Anyway I actually did a reinstall with a slipstreamed XP with sp2 on it. I got it into the cd using Barts PE. It is running better than ever and even passed windows authentication.
Previously I did a chkdisk command in Bart's PE and copied an identical NTFS.SYS from another system with puppy linux. I backed up the owners documents and settings to a 4gb key with puppy linux in case anything went wrong. Thanks for the ideas.
