XP wants driver when USB device is inserted
Hi All,
I have problems recently with my computers. 2 of them. Both running XP Media Center Edition. Both Updated to SP3. Both can't recognize USD devices. Anything that set up during the initial set up will work. Lately, any USB device that plug in, Windows requests driver installation. USB flash drives, camera, memory card reader...anything. With camera, I installed the camera driver and software and Windows still requests driver. Nothing works. I am thinking that this is a registry problem but don't know how to fix it. It is very odd because the USB ports are working and no issues in the Device Manager.
Please help me fix the problem before a complete reinstall.
Many Thanks!

Did you install the chipset drivers for your machine?
I quite often see this behaviour after a spyware attack - are you sure your machine is clean?

Hi NooNoo,
Yes, the chipset drivers are installed. They have been working for about 6 months until a month ago. I put a pen drive in and the computer ask for driver. Then, I tried a memory card reader and the computer ask for driver. However, the printer and the another card reader are working. These 2 were working prior to the problem. Adaware and Norton did catch something. Some were removed and some are still being quarantined.
If there is any fix, I will appreciate it.
Thanks in advance.

When did you install SP3, before or after Adaware "did something"?
Try uninstalling then reboot, then applying SP3 again... it should replace the files. If not try this If that doesn't work, we will have to examine your usb files.

I forgot when. I think the problem occurred after SP3. There was a scan that caught a few serious problems recently but it was after the problem.
Could this be a software conflict?
Thanks!

It's still worth reinstalling sp3 and using the autoplay fix. There is malware which gets into autorun.inf and screws up installation of usb drives.

Hi, I'm having the exact same problem but on a new installation of XP home.
So sorry for butting into your thread but please could you also help me too.
I am pulling my hair out as it is a clients PC and they have all their personal stuff backed up on an external hard drive, that can not be accessed.

What service pack level is the new installation?
Was the drive properly formatted before installing?

What version is your usbstor.sys located in windows\system32 - for comparison mine is 5.1.2600.5512
It sounds like you may have installed something that uses a slightly non standard usb driver and it's taken over...

My usbstor.sys is the same as yours.
This is driving me nuts now as it was a clean install.
Maybe I'll have to do a repair install and see if that will work.
