    Antivirus solution news

Well....Still trying to find the holy grail of the antivirus. NIS 2008 does a good job, But is heavy on non dual core computers (Even 3ghz cpus).
Avast is not good enough. Got 2 infection last week in 2 different computers. Avira's Antivir DID recognise 1 of the infected computer files PRIOR to running it in a test i've conducted.
NIS 2009 is faster than 2008 and works fast even on my super-computer (Sempron 3400+ 1gb).
Had a client with infected system while NIS 2009 gave errors after installation which made me remove it, NIS 2008 did removed the infected file.
Another system was dis-infected by NIS 2009 without any problem.
So from my point of view, Best free non-firewalled solution is Avira's Antivir + Windows defender (+ annoying comodo if you need firewall).
Nis 2009 is best for a non infected system for total protection.

P.S. my friend told me he uses pctools free AV on his clients for the past 6 months, But needed to disable the email plugin, Since it made some problems for 2 of his clients.

Sounds like a lot of headaches. Actually I went through all of that over a year ago. If you can try and get a demo of NOD32 from Eset it's a lot less of a resource hog and is very efficient. I have yet to get a complaint from anyone I've sent towards them.
One Script to rule them all.
    One Script to find them.
One Script to bring them all,
    and clean up after itself.

I've used nod32 for the past year for all of my clients. it gaves great protection while low on resources BUT me myself got 3 infections (one infection 1/2 year ago, and 2 infection in one week), I must mention that I've wrote about this trojan to ESET 1/2 year before....This trojan btw disabled windows firewall...
That's when I've decided to go for the NIS 2008.

Your experience is no different to any other Anti Virus solution. All AV is reactive. If you happen to be the person who get's the bug before anyone has heard of it, all you can do is send it to the AV companies and let them deal with it.

I would rate ESET over NIS any day.

The thing is Noo is that I warned ESET 1/2 a year before about that same trojan !! It was funny that it was "fixed" in their update the second time I've mentioned it 1/2 year later.....Better late than never (to replace AV software :O)

I have several clients which use kaspersky corporate edition. One of them was infected by some trojan, And the only way i could take it out of the system was by installing NIS 2008 (Tried avast, Antivir, Nis 2009 before that).
It seems that antivir is the free equavilent of eset in some aspects. I had general success with nod32 with non heavy users, But from day to day it seems that every computer needs a total security solution that incorporate a firewall....

It's worth a mention that Eset Smart Security incorporates AV, a firewall, and spam filtering.

Overall, I think most companies should discontinue using the phrase "Tech Support" and go with something a little more descriptive of the process. Maybe "Wild *** Guess" or "Irrelevant Script Recital". I'm currently having a problem with NOD32 and some financial software that uses (and only works with) an 8 year old VPN client. Dealing with support on both sides of the issue is a bit less rewarding than talking to my dog. At least the dog pricks up his ears and wags his tail to show he's interested.

But, I went through a similar episode with Symantec recently. A client running SAV 8.1 suddenly found it would no longer install updates. Not only Live Update, but manually installed Intelligent Updater downloads. After moving up the support chain a couple of notches, I'm still waiting for a solution. But, hey, its only been a year.

Got a new virus today while running antivir+windows defender.
Some winfilse file infected my system. It shut down antivir + defender, And damaged the defender that it can't be run even after reinstalltion.
Antivir scan and superantispyware didn't detected it.
Installed NIS 2009 which recognised it after a restart before even I ran a scan and it fixed the problem by itself !!!
    Kodus to symantec.

    Side note
The greatest Virus prevention is to not get infected in the first place!

    Side note explained
It is largely due to user fault (PEBCAK) that viruses are getting into computer systems.
Users shoud be educated on how to use the computer in a safe manner.
I trully believe that If you have a client that all day long is sharing files on P2P (while opening unneccesry ports), surfing to Hacking/Cracking/On line Gambling and porn, Installing Cracked version of Application/Games - you get the Idea.

In an allegory - No condom is protecting 100% against STD's - mind who you sleep with.

Alot of it also depends on the method of infection. I suspect if you got the virus again with just NIS installed, NIS would be screwed over and the other virus checkers would detect it on initial scan as well.

"mind who you sleep with"....Lol....i'll ask her to install NIS on her body :O)

Well....After messing around with my computer for few hours....NIS recognised and blocked the trojan, but system was still infected....I could only restore it from a backup I had.....I couldn't even boot into safe mode...It kept restarting.....
