XP Task Manager - What's Running?
I worked out a way (which you probably already know about, sigh!) to determine just what is running under the ubiquitous 'svchost' tag in Task Manager. Sometimes you may see a large amount of cpu or ram usage and/or page faults.
In Task Manager, Processes, View, Select Columns, select PID as a field to show. Now you can see that various processes/services have a unique PID.
If you don't have XP Pro, download Tasklist.exe from here: http://www.computerhope.com/download/winxp.htm and save it in your [username] folder.
Then click start, run, enter cmd /k, then enter tasklist /svc.
You'll see a list of processes/services with PIDs.
Match your PIDs found above to determine which specific process/service(s) go with which svchost.
At least now you have a namne for them.

...or just use Process Explorer and see everything your heart desires pr0n not included
You can even set it to replace the task manager. Once you start using it you won't go back to the task manager.
