compaq evo d300v and 512 mb ram

I am trying to upgrade my compaq evo d300v to 512 mb of ram from the 256 that it had, when I do so the machine will not boot. When I reinstall the old ram the machine works. I would appreciate help with this issue. I tried taking the ram out and installing it in different slots and nothing works.

Well first off we need some details
Exactly what ram are you trying to install?
That model number is attached to several different models

Did you use one of the online memory assessment pages like Crucial or Corsair or Kingston?

You can go to this page and Click the Scan My System and it should tell you exactly what your memory options are

    Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3
    AMD FX 8350 4ghz OCTO-Core
    Windows 8.1 PRO 64
    Adata 256 gig SSD
    Kingston HyperX 1600 16 Gigs
    Sapphire R9 280 2gig

Compaq are very very picky about the ram they use... check ferrit's link, it will get you the right stuff and it is guaranteed to work.

Are you replacing a single 256mb stick with a single 512? That could also be the problem.
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."

    From HP's PartSurfer website:
    http://partsurfer.hp.com/cgi-bin/spi...e=%3F&uniqpic=

    P/N 170081-001, 128MB, 133MHz Non-ECC SDRAM DIMM memory
You can also find several manuals located here:
    http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport...eriesId=321973

...including System Memory Support in a .pdf file.

    Good Luck!
