so it came away in one chunk? You might find you have a bent pin or two then
Do you have a thin plastic item that could be used to slide between the cpu and hsf? A credit card it too thick... like a dummy credit card (they are thin but quite tough). Put the hsf on it's side, holding the hsf only, slide the implement between, careful but firm pressure and have a motherboard anti static bag near the cpu side to catch it...
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."

how the heck am i gonna straighten them? there's a couple really bent, and a few slightly leaning.
it still wont come away from the hsf. i have tried various thicknesses of card (not my credit card) and it appears there's just no leeway to stick the card into... i suppose its because the glue has been heated up and it says its semi-permanent !!!
any more ideas?

I have found that tweezers supplied with swiss army knives are thin enough to do the job.... if you have a magnifying glass that can be held, it helps too. Pin straightening requires careful and patient concentration.

could be a £137 expensive lesson in how to not do a pc-build! the supplier i got it from is now showing out of stock... elsewhere its around that price with a 3-5 day wait.
while we're on the subject, why would the bios report 500gb hdd's x2 and Win-xp(when installing) reports partitionsize of max 131gb? the mobo is a rev-2 version.

You could try freezing the cpu/hsf which should make the glue brittle and then try separating... you may need a sharp rap to break the bond... I would suggest a stiff cooks' scraper, line it up carefully and then smack it with the hand.

so, assuming i get this pc working again and install my copy of XP; plus the service packs, from WindowsUpdate .... would it then see the extra capacity of the hard drives and be able to partition etc?

Yep, so create a single partition your hd with xp setup disk and then load sp3 directly afterwards. I keep it on an usb stick - easy that way, then get your drivers and windows updates. Then partition the rest of the drive. I wouldn't have more than 50 gig partition for xp and move my docs to another partition... that way you keep most of your user data off the system drive.... you can also move your email and templates.

lol
gotta get a (new) cpu first...!!!!
update:
as i had nothing to lose, i decided to use the tim clean fluid around the cpu and hsf to see if it would loosen up the cpu - and voila, it did. the cpu is now hsf free but with bent pins. really dont know how i will straighten them up because i dont have tweezers /and or magnifying glasses / steady hand....!! lol
cant do anything with the hsf / cpu until the thermal grease comes on monday.
