2900 xt v 4870
I am in the process of a system upgrade, I have a 2900 xt 512 mb and was thinking of getting a 4870 512 mb is there any big performance difference? the model numbers seem to suggest it but havnt found much evidence on net
A computer once beat me at chess, but it was no match for me at kick boxing.

Performance is in the eye of the beholder... it rather depends what you want to do with it... Did you have some apps or games in mind? Are you using Blueray?
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."

To be honest I have a pioneer blu ray which the 2900 xt handles easily, it is DHCP asus card, its just I am going to upgrade to the new intel i7 chip with an asus P6T and wondered if their would be any real benefit in upping the video card

Your talking about 2 different cards completely
There is to begin a generational difference as well as a power requirement difference.
