    I believe we've moved beyond what I've got the stomach to do. Greatly appreciate your help, and may try again with input from friend who put the computer together.
    Thanks.

    I'm not sure straight XP Home has the getmac.exe capability - ipconfig /all might reveal the mac address though.

    OK, no problem.
    Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."

    CCT I wish it did, would have saved a lot of trouble, but if the ethernet controller is not installed, ipconfig doesn't show it.

    OOPS!

    Yeah - just tried uninstalling my adapter - neither query gets a response.

    edit: I would surmise that the poster will eventually have to get the Via 4-in-1 drivers to make that work;

    I got this very same problem but with another motherboard. I removed vista and installed xp prof SP3 and i cant seem to find any drivers at all to the Ethernet Controller [NoDB] PCI. Any idea as to where i might find some drivers for that? My motherboards name is FUJITSU SIEMENS AMILO Li 1718.

    FS make it clear they don't guarantee these will work;

    'These operating systems have NOT been tested or released for this component!
    Fujitsu Siemens Computers therefore, doesn´t support any functionality, for any Operating System! Using any of the drivers listed, is at your own risk!'

    Enter AMILO Li 1718 then go through the hoops and later you get to select another operating system -

    Hmm, looks like they don't offer any XP drivers at all.

    You may be able to ID the ethernet controller using Everest Free and source a reference LAN driver from another source such as the chip manufacturer.

    That's right - when FS finally let you get through all their hoops, they say 'XP not supported'.

    So, you can identify your involved chipset(s) and start searching for something online and 'TRY' various drivers.

    Or re-install the design operating system and learn to love it.

    edit: If that is the IBM X60 tablet, the drivers should be here;
