    Question Newbie

    Hi!
I’m a newbie to Linux. I have a Windows 95 computer that is fairly old I want to change it to Linux. My computer only recognizes Floppy disks while booting, which version would work best for it?

    Welcome to Windrivers Lera

If you want to be able to continue to use Windows while you learn you can get floppix

Put the install CD into the CD-ROM and make sure that the computer is set to boot from a CD-ROM. Once that is done you'll get a menu to install or install in safe mode. I suggest safe mode. When the desktop loads you will see an install icon on the upper left. Make sure you're connected to the internet and run the install. Just follow the instructions after that and you're set for having Ubuntu on the system.

You can go and install WINE to emulate windows however I just want you to know it won't make any windows program work basically from what I observed anything pre-winxp will work and some programs for windows xp will work on it. I am not at my house or I'd give you a step by step on how to inistall WINE. If you decide to download it make sure you download the install that is for Ubuntu or Debian both are the same thing in a matter of speaking.

Depends on the make and model lera...from what you said, it may not support booting from cd rom - you would need a startup disk from www.bootdisk.com to boot the machine and install drivers for the cd rom. You can then start the installation manually... check the documentation.

I'm a newbie, too. I've decided to throw Linux on an old laptop here (Ubuntu) but I'm having one issue.

When I activate the wireless and configure it for my network - if I close out the network settings window and reopen it, it will be deactivated again and I have no connection.

Suggestions? I know the laptop has wireless because when my wife used it, she used wireless (WinXP).

Alot depends on which version of Ubuntu and what the hardware is...

Dell D610 laptop 0 Intel ProSet wireless.

Ubuntu - I was on 6.(something) but I went and got 8.10 (the latest version) - the drivers are allegedly built in but it's not working. I did get wired to work, so I've disconnected one of my computers from the network so i can update it, get drivers, if needed, and see if I can get it to kick on by itself.
