pcmatty, are you asking to make Vista look like XP or do you want to replace Vista with XP?
Both are possible.
Personally, I wouldn't both with either, I would recommend that you get Vista upgraded to Windows 7. Windows 7 and laptops are great together... to the point where I don't use my XP laptop anymore because it is so slow connecting to wireless networks and bluetooth.

You have to buy a windows XP disk and install it on the computer to "make it into" windows xp. There is no downgrade disk you can use or buy.
One Script to rule them all.
One Script to find them.
One Script to bring them all,
and clean up after itself.

And you will be very lucky if you can get all of the devices to install. In all likely hood you will end up with some hardware that wont install. This is because the hardware was designed for windows vista and may not have xp drivers

PC Matty, if you want it to look like XP do these steps
Right-click on your Windows Vista desktop and select "Personalize."
Double-click "Theme", which is the second-to-last on the list.
Select "Windows Classic" from the drop-down box in the Theme Window.
Click the "Apply" button to save your changes.
Next right-click on the "Start" Button you just brought back in the lower-left hand corner of your screen.
Select "Properties" in the menu that pops up.
Go to the "Start Menu" Tab in the Properties window.
Click on the radio button next to "Classic Menu."
Click on "Customize" to further alter the start menu to your liking. You can add and remove features like recent files or favorites, change icon sizes or add the "Run" command. Play around until it's to your liking.

Ferrit hit the nail on the head. I've had to turn away a few downgrades from Vista to XP for the simple fact that XP needs a driver to see a lot of the newer hard disk controllers and sata hard disks. Without a XP driver from the manufacturer or means in the BIOS to do so, loading the XP installer on said system results in it telling you there is no hard disk on the system.
