1G over homemade Cat 5e 30m cable
Hi,
I'm trying to upgrade my home network speed, Since I transfer large amount of data between drives at times and speedier copy would be neat.
I bought 2 Edimax 5 port gigabyte switches :
http://www.edimax.com/en/produce_det...id=4&pl2_id=24
Now, I use bought Cat 5e 1.5M cables to connect 1 computer to each switch, And I get an orange lights at the switch which confirms it's a 1G connection (I also see the xp network indicators of 1G speed).
I also use a home made 30M cable that connects both switches, but it gives me only 100M speed indication on the switches
I don't know if it's because the length or quality of the cables, But I used all 8 colored wires when I pressed the RJ45 connecter and made sure all wires are connected and working.
Please advise.
Thank you

I am pretty sure you need Cat6 cable to
get the connection telling you it is 1 gig
Although then it still doesnt transfer at 1 gig.
Certainly the cat5e will be somewhat better
transfer speeds then standard cat5 but not gig

There are different qualities of CAT5e. Try CAT6 or shorter CAT5e. Make sure it is well crimped (check with a tester), if you miss-wire one of the pairs it will fall to 100M.
Make sure it's properly wired too... I've had many instances in which 2 wires twisted while inserting them.
