thermal issue

got a pc which was running for 10 minutes or so.a thermal issue warning popped up press f1 to continue f2 to enter setup.i shut pc off.opened it and
removed cover that ran from fan to proc.heat was caked in dust , after cleaning and waiting awhile;reassembled tried to boot again but got black screen with just arrow cursor.whats toast proc or graphics?
pc is/was a dell dimension 3000 with xp pro

Open it back up, check that you didn't dislodge a connector (check all of them to be sure they are fully connected) and that the heatsink didn't get loosened from the cpu.

thanks for the reply.i just checked everything and nothing is loose.can i reboot?

Assuming you didn't give the unit an electrostatic shock, the original thermal shutdown would have likely been cpu initiated.

Modern cpu shutdown events can be critical, since cpu throttling should have happened for a slightly high temp.

This is, to me, an indication that there may indeed be a fried component (cpu?).

Was nothing specific shown re the event?

when the thermal event screen happened i just shut down.the screen itself was all black
tried a reboot;the windows logo ran and than the black screen with the arrow cursor and now the hour glass was there like something was loading.shut it down again

So now you have the task of researching the make/model of computer or motherboard and determining what thermal protections it has and how that affects it to get the results you are experiencing.


The first clue is that message -work from there.
