    Shared Drive

Have a 320GB USB external hard drive attached to my XP Pro machine and shared with an assigned letter of "F". I use this for the backup in the household network. When the PC is shutdown for the night then started the next day, the share is gone and I have to re-share it again with all permissions. Anyone have an idea why this is happening?

Have you assigned the letter F? or does it reassign new letters all the time?

    Hi,
are you using "simple file sharing" (which always seems to me as the least simple way...)
if so - disable the feature

Thank you for the info, checked on this and found I did have simple file sharing turned off. I thought what the heck and remembered I did this to gain access to a protected folder. I have now turned it back on to see if this was the problem.

After much experimenting, determined problem was the PC was starting up before the external drive, therefore losing sharing.
