Actually, I'm still he just hit the 10 connections limit. Along with the KB article on resolving Error 71 messages, I should have suggested he reboot all the machines on the network. Boy, do I feel like a dope! With 85 machines on a peer to peer network, he's going to be doing a lot of that.

Since I know the changes aren't being considered because of costs here is what i think you should do. I would suggest making a presentation that indicates how the needed infrastructure changes required to standardize the network and to have a reliable and stable environment will save money. To do so I think you should indicate the cost in downtime and labor to fix the problems that are inherent with a patchwork arrangement as you have and show how standardization will reduce this down time and thus save money in the long run. Of course you could just say the heck with it and rely on mother nature induced reboots of the network to solve problems. Incidentally since "sparks flew" you may want to make sure nothing was compromised with the lightning srike and it may even prove to be useful in convincing them to upgrade/standardize if anything was damaged/destabilized.
One Script to rule them all.
One Script to find them.
One Script to bring them all,
and clean up after itself.
