Maxtor External HD - Code 10
Hi... I am not sure if I should be starting a new thread, or finding a similar one... so, sorry if I am overstepping the rules.... anyway..
the other day, I was saving a file to my Maxtor 200gb HD, and during the process something happended and the saving became "no longer responding"... I waited and waited for it to respond, and it never came back around....
since then, I cannot access that Maxtor 200gb, and have the "Device Cannot Start (Code 10)" error...
I have IBM/Lenovo T61 laptop.. XP with SP3... the Maxtor in question is One Touch III 2.0 usb
I have 2 other Maxtors (100gb) and Seagate (500gb) running through usb-hub, with no problems...
I have tried the Maxtor200 on a different PC, new usb-cable, installed/uninstalled/reinstalled, restarted PC, etc etc... all with no luck
I am afraid all is lost... but will to try further efforts to see if it can be resolved....
any recommendations will be most welcome

You should be able to remove the harddrive from the case and just connect it like any other harddrive to another computer, like with a ide or sata conector.

There are 2 ways to do this.
1: you need a USB adapter, all of this should be readily apparent on this page.

2: Take the harddrive out and take it ot a desktop and put it in the desktop computer.

thanks Ferrit... i will look it over and report back....
one quick question... do i have to attach to a desktop? a laptop (either my primary, or even a secondary) is not acceptable? or, are your above steps an either/or scenerio (step 1 or step 2)....
naturally, i am a bit apprehensive about this, but what-the-heck -- i've got nothing going on with that HD now anyway, yea?
fingers crossed

do i need to worry about SATA v. PATA?
i was doing some on-line checking on this, and some discussions indicated older technology is "PATA", newer technology is "SATA", etc...
my laptop is less than 2 years old
my home PC (Dell tower) is just over 3 years
the maxtor external drive can't be more than 3 years or so...

Alternative. Different brand. I have hands on experience with that brand.

hey.... grabbed one of these yesterday... un-cased the xHD, plugged it in... attached to PC, PC found the drive
device manager shows:
"USB Mass Storage Device",
"the device is working properly",
and "use this device (enable)"
but, i can't seem to find it in "my computer"... it was not assigned a letter....
when i look in "safely remove hardware", it is listed, but again - no drive letter
how do i access the files/data on the USB?
thanks for all the continued help/assistance!

Right click my computer, and choose Manage, then left side choose disk management.
Then it should ask you to initialize the disk
