Computer will not run Multi USB devices

My XP stop running my Ipod and my external HD when they are plugged in at the same time. They will work if there is only one plugged in.
Any Ideas out there?

So, with one plugged in and functioning, when you connect the second the first stops and the second never starts?

Is that the condition?

No the first continues to work but the second you get the don't recognize message or unknown device.
They both have been working together great till this morning.
My HD has my Itune music. So I would take that music thru Itunes and put it into my Ipod. I've been doing this for months this way with out a problem. Till this morning...

You haven't assigned a drive letter to each that is the same have you?

Or, conversely, you might connect one at a time and give each a specific drive letter manually.

Have you checked the power consumption of the Root Hubs (dev manager)

Great questions.. but why would these things need to be done now..beings All I every do is just plug them in one at a time? Sorry ...

Do you think it's related to the issue I have is that the computer will not boot up when I have a USB device plugged into it. The USB will work after it's boot up. This issue has been going on for about a month or so.

Laptop power issue maybe - do you boot up with the power pack engaged?

It may be a USB stack issue - you can uninstall each Root Hub in Dev manager and reboot (restart in all cases unless you're using a USB mouse then you'll need to press the power button (it should be configured to shut the comp down if it is on and that button is pressed).

This is a CPU not a Laptop. No power pack used.
I will check on the stack issue.
Thanks a lot... I've been going around circle with this not booting up problem... I checked the Bois and they seem ok. I was going to reset them to the Default but could figure out how to do that.
I guess one problem at a time...right...
