Can't install shared win7 printer on xp home

    Hi all :O)

Just tried to adda win7 shared printer (model Hp 2420) to an xp home workstation on the same network.
When i add it manually or vie "connect", It sees the printer, But asks for driver files. I downloaded it's files from hp site (Specific winxp drivers and universal too), But it just refuses to recognise the printer with these drivers.
It doesn't even let me choose manually a compatible driver.
What I did is captured the lpt1 port via NET USE command and then installed the driver. it works, but I don't like it to be dependent on Dos mode sharing.

    Would appreciate your insights.

    Thank you

Can you not add additional drivers into the win7 install? I've not tried it on win7, but i have done it in 2k8 r2. This way the drivers will get auto-pushed when you add the shared printer. It's probably an x64 vs x86 issue

your other option would be to add it as a TCP/IP port, then your XP install would think it's a local driver and you can force the issue.

    Thanks for the reply Mat.
It is in fact win7 x64......
At the moment i'll leave it as it is and hope it will work in a stable way.
I wonder how do i inject legacy drivers into win7 printers....

in the printer properties, go into the sharing tab, there is a button for "additional drivers" click it, put a check mark in x86, click OK and it will prompt you for drivers. point it to the proper ones.

    Good luck
