    mother board is a gigabyteGA-MA74GM-S2 REV 4.4

Hello, Twisted! Windows 7 actually needs a driver for the controller on the motherboard. It will be on the driver DVD that shipped with the board. Insert the disk and tell the Installer to look on the DVD. Worst case scenario, you might have to browse for the driver and point windows at the correct folder.

Used a number of these boards and it is also possible you will need a jumper, bizarre as that sounds.
There is some issue with that board seeing a sata drive above 250 gigs.
You can try setting the bios controller to ACHI as well. That may or not

You need to install the controller driver when installing Windowze (F6).

Set the controller in the proper mode (AHCI or RAID) before installing. You will also need a floppy drive.

You need to copy the drivers to a floppy (or even USB stick for Vista/7).
Follow the exact instructions from the manual http://download.gigabyte.us/FileList...4gm_v4.1_e.pdf
Chapter 5-1-3 gives you the exact procedure, assuming you have followed the hardware setup instructions.

If Win7 doesn't like the drivers on your installation disk, you will need to get the 64bit drivers here: http://www.gigabyte.com/products/pro...px?pid=3323#dl

After you download the chipset drivers, extract them to a pendrive, and point the Installer to that drive. You don't need to install from a floppy; Vista and Win7 will find drivers from other media just fine.

Controller should be set to Native IDE mode, and you need the chipset driver, not the preinstallation driver for SATA or AHCI modes.
