Sharing a USB printer across 2 subnets
I have a USB printer that is shared on a Windows XP machine with IP X.X.48.X. I have another computer that is on a different subnet. It is a Windows 7 PC on subnet X.X.41.X. now the problem is when I try to search for that printer on the Windows 7 PC using //computername/printersharename, it doesn't find it. I've tried searching through the network, but I can't even find the PC.
The computers are not on a domain. They are in the same Workgroup. Is it possible to get this printer setup on the Windows 7 PC even though they are on different subnets?
Or do I need to make sure they are on the same subnet to be able to setup the shared printer. Oh, I won't be able to network the printer, it needs to be setup as USB on the Win XP PC.
I think the problem is either an ID10T or PEBCAK error

Is there a router connecting the two subnets?
If yes, can you ping the "server" machine from the client at least by IP?
If no, how do you expect to route packets between the two subnets?

well a little subnet mask change could make those ip's see each other depending on what network class you are in and hardware in use. They may even already see each other if it is a class A or B or depending on what the person that set them up did. Best bet for you is to make a network diagram of what you have there and get everything layed out so you "know" the network because it seems now you are just flailing away at it with a tire iron. I am not sure if this is the same network as your other question about printers but if it is my advice is to get them all on the domain so you can taake advantage of file and printer sharing from the servers.
Other than that yeah pretty hard to get a printer to print to a computer on a separate subnet without more information about the network and what is shared or not shared and if the computers can ping each other, netbios, many questions....
