windows vista upgrade cd will not play
I am trying to install a 32 bit windows vista upgrade over a windows xp 32 bit, and the cd will not play. I bought the cd used and had it buffed out a a computer repair shop to make sure any scratches were not interfering. I can get other cd 's to play. The disk says part number x12-24190-00, and it says dvd rom. The cd player that I have is cd writer but not a dvd player, but I have dvd sftwre installed on this computer. I would appreciate any perspective.

Vista and Windows 7 require a DVD drive to install the OS. If you can't even meet that level of hardware compliance, I think it unlikely that your computer can run Vista. Sorry, but I think you need to shoot Old Yeller and buy a new machine.

SL is right, if the computer is even just pushed to the minimum requirements you're not going to be pleased with the experience. On another note there is absolutely no way of getting a CD-ROM to read a DVD it's akin to trying to make a betamax play in a VHS player.
One Script to rule them all.
One Script to find them.
One Script to bring them all,
and clean up after itself.

Sounds like the DVD-ROM disk is bad. But I agree with Niclo, if you are pushing the computers' limits with XP, it will run Vista dreadfully slow.

I bought the installation cd used on ebay and the seller insists it is good, and that he tested I am going to do the other upgrades on the computer. the dvd that I am using is an external one. The usb connection is slow.

Get your money back if you still can.
