System restore can be and is quite often infected?
Why did you try system restore? viruses?
Many times the very reason you try to use system restore is the reason it does not work?

i delete some files, that i thought i did not need anymore. I had some problems with viruses about 3 years ago. I was using a free anti-virus program that used to sent false positives,so i bought norton 360 and did not have any more problems. Should i turn the system restore off for a couple days and then turned it back on?

No, it went through all the steps to do a restore, but just said it could not restore to that date.

That's an indication that some of the restore files are damaged, so try an earlier date. In some cases, the restore files may be so corrupted that system restore won't work at all.
