How do you install Linux on an external hard drive?

I'm trying to breath new life into an old PC where windows crashed - I have the old hard drive in an external case and can link it to a laptop - but I'm not 100% sure how to go about getting linux installed on the external hard drive before replacing it into the old PC.

I don't want to end up with Linux on the laptop.

    Any ideas?

Welcome to Windrivers alcotti. Why don't you want to install Linux on the PC directly? You will have to have the drivers, (video , audio, etc.) for the PC any way.
It's not the computers that keep having problems, it's the users!!

I agree with Zonie here, it would be easier to install linux on the drive if it was installed in the computer that you intend to put linux on. Not to mention it will take care of installing drivers on the first run through rather than manually having to install a new set of drivers. If I recall I've had issues migrating a linux drive from one pc to a new one making it not able to boot and forcing me to just re-install anyway since it was the faster/easier option. So in the end even if you installed it on that extrernal drive just to put it internally on another pc you might just end up installing it again while the drive is in the pc it was intended for.

    Welcome to WinDrivers!

If you need linux not installed, you might consider creating some type of persistent disk image for a linux livecd. Depending on which distro you want to use, you can do this relatively painlessly.

What distro were you considering? As well, what version of that distro?
