    Optical mouse

My mouse used to work well but now its awful with selecting text and drag and drop. Is there any particular component that tends to go faulty? I have a smooth mat now but it used to work ok with a fabric topped one.

I tried to connect a serial port mouse but Win XP doesn't appear to support them.

A serial port mouse must be connected before starting the computer.
Check if the optics are full of dust - that would be the #1 cause for not working well. If it's wireless then check the batteries and the placement of the receiver. If all fails a new mouse is $10
