Unhappy Windows 98 SE keeps forgeting there's a sound card installed

I built a computer from old parts laying around (all of which were known good parts). It's a 200mhz pentium with 64meg of ram running W98 SE and I think it's an Alton motherboard (no real markings). It was working fine for several weeks. For some reason this week every time you shutdown the computer it forgets it has a 16 bit plug & play sound card. You have to go to the add new hardware wizard every time and reinstall it. It always finds it, but this is getting to be a pain. Any suggests where to look?

First I would try with a dif. slot and reinstall the drivers and check for the latest if any are available! Had that happen to my kids old machine and that took care of the problem.

It sounds like something's crowding it in the device settings. Try forcing the sound card to another IRQ in Device Manager. See if that stabilizes the system...
