Just a word of warning, I have had 2 out of 10 of those give up the ghost with zero warning, and Western Digital doesn't warrant the data, only the drive. Don't misuderstand me, I like WD drives, I just don't want you to count on them alone for a single point of crucial data storage.

Thanks for the warning I am looking at a 500 gig drive right now it is a western digital. It is a replacement for the first one. The first one gave up the ghost and I returned it to western digital, and they sent me this replacement drive. It sits on my desk in it`s anti static bag. When it failed I was glad I backed it up with the 80 gig western digital for my paid downloads. I have Nero 8 and other programs. that did not come with a disk. I am reading my post as I write thinking I used to be a seagate guy. The tara sits on my desk does not move. (excess movement killing drive) ? My 500 gig had no movement except accessing it which I guess internally platter scramble or board failure. I have taken apart some old drives to understand the mechanical and they are built good.
Last thing I remember, running for the door,
I had to find the passage back to the place
    I was before.

I am not comparing tools, I am comparing storage and access methods. Virtually identical for the end user. Also amazon has it's own cloud service, just like Google and MS.
Their font-end apps access the cloud data. Plain and simple. I wrote code to be used by front-end apps for Amazon cloud data access so ummmm....

Data that doesn't exist in 2 different physical locations doesn't exist...

I think it's cool that you've done some of the programming for these services, but as you and I often seem to do, I think we are having an apples and oranges conversation.

Sorry if I'm wrong, but I think you see it as mostly about the code, and I think it is mostly about the interface.

Yeah, my experiences with WD external drives haven't been so good. MyBooks seem to overheat often and get flaky, and Passports seem even less reliable. The drive of your choice and a decent enclosure like a Vantec or Thermaltake is probably a better bet than any of the factory-built external drives. I'd have to say, though that Seagate Expansion Drives have worked very well for me.

My Mensa card says that I'm officially smarter than 98% of mankind. I have no problem believing how stupid other people can be. All the same, I can be a fool for a good pair of stockings. Tough to beat fine legs with or without stockings.

The interface is what the code makes...
In the end it's pretty much "shared storage over IP" regardless of mechanism.
