    Vista SP1 install woes

    Hello all,

    This machine died after installing Vista SP1. It does the following:

    Regular startup, last known good startup, VGA mode all do this:

    Black screen with this flashing:

    !!0xc0000034 !! 250/99549 (_00000000000000 .cdf-ms).

    Safe mode with networking

    gets to this line and stops:

    Loaded c:\windows\system32\drivers\AVGIDSEH.sys

    then hard drive activity stops.

    Startup repair using Vista cd yields these problem details:

    StartuprepairV2
    sig1 = Externalmedia
    sig2 = 6.0.6000.16386.6.0.6001.18000
    sig3 = 6
    sig4 = 524296
    sig5 = BadDriver
    sig6 = BadDriver
    sig7 = 0
    sig8 = 3
    sig9 = Wrprepair
    sig10 = 10

    The only restore point that is available to use is from 4-24-12, when the service pack was installed. It goes so far, then says something about writing or finalizing? files, and just sits there....I have let it go for a few hours then I turned it off.

    I also tried the Microsoft 975484 which involves saving and running a script on the Windows install. The script stops and says "vbscript runtime error: activeX component cannot create object 'Microsoft.xmldom'

    Help!

    My guess was you installed avg. I did a search for the file you listed and found this link

    Sounds like what you are looking for from my point of view.
    One Script to rule them all.
    One Script to find them.
    One Script to bring them all,
    and clean up after itself.

    OK, I followed that link and renamed all AVG* files in that folder. Rebooted.

    Normal mode still gives me the blinking !! error screen, safe mode now stops on crcdisk.sys

    grrrr....

    I always like to a least run basic hardware tests, like a full hard drive diagnostic and at least a couple of passes of Memtest 86+ in this sort of situation. That's especially true since your errors seem to keep morphing. To me that suggests a strong possibility of more than a failed update. Verifying that your hardware is good might save you some time wasted with repeated attempts to reload Vista on a seriously sick computer.

    Yep, good idea. I checked the memory before any of this, it checks out. I will start a thorough hd check.

    Hard drive checks out fine, as does the memory...

    Then I'd say that you are left with Mobile's suggestion.

    I cannot perform a repair install because the upgrade option is grayed out. I have tried 4 different Vista CDs, they all do the same thing.

    Advice?

    Wow. Usually on Monday's things go much worse.

    Just for kicks, I thought I would try to run system restore from the Vista CD again (for the 5th time). There has been only one restore point each time, same as this one. I went ahead and selected it and let it do its thing. Rebooted, expecting the flashing !! error screen (for the 5th time), but this time - I GET A VISTA DESKTOP!

    I am greatly surprised, but don't want to get real excited yet, it could revert at next boot up....
