sblive&winxp = crackling
system: amd duron 900, via kt133 chipset, geforce 256, sblive! value, windows xp professional.
since i installed winxp, whenever i am playing an mp3 or other sound, and copy files or access harddrive intensive apps, i get a really annoying crackling sound. it did it with the original winxp sblive drivers, and ive downloaded the new ones from creatives site and it does exactly the same.
any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Go into media player and click on tools then options, then click on devices then click on error correct on the drive you use to play a disc. I just accidently found the "official Microsoft response" to this annoying problem. It worked gor me!

Check out this site for the FAQ on sound cards. Lots of help with this exact problem.

Do you have the AGP fastwrites option enabled for your Geforce in bios?
This is a particularly strange way of speeding up video which seems to cause more problems than its worth with dma, it particularly doesn't like soundcards that use dma.

Do what dadtech suggested. This is a very common issue with a number of VIA chipset based boards and Live! audiocards, for some reason also especially if there's a GeForce card in system.
You can also go here:
http://www.viaarena.com/
and here:
http://www.viatech.com/en/index/index.jsp
Though you will see a lot of duplicate information.

I should have said in my last post, check and see if there's a motherboard bios update(many via motherboards have issues with this s/c).
There is also a utility to turn all the 'nasty' dma features of Geforce cards, but I can't remember what its called or where I can find it, so unless someone here knows......

Just as a note since no one mentioned it here, the SB Live drivers that ship with XP are horrid. The sound really bad. As a final step, I would head over to creative's site and grab the newest ones...
My brain went into standby mode and I can't get it to wake up, is there a BIOS patch for this?

Can you borrow another s/c and try?
I do think its that s/c mb combo. Some motherboards really don't like soundblaster live cards, if you fish about on viahardware.com you might try the PCI Latency patch, but that can/could/might harm your system....

I also suggest checking out http://www.viaarena.com/ for info on this issue. I know that there are numerous threads in their forums for overcoming this problem on both the ApolloPro133/A and the KT133(AMD equivalent).

Let's try this..........which slot do you have the card in?
Try different slots. The closer you get to the upper slots, the more success you will have.

Just a quick note in case this was never solved. I had the exact issuse in my own system, tried everything I could think of but nothing. After much frustration I reloaded the VIA chipset drivers but unloaded the IDE option now everything is working just fine
