    Unhappy Base System Device Driver

Recently I have had to reinstall Windows 7 x64 (ultimate) to my Vaio VGN-Z710DD (sold in Canada only).
The Vaio originally came with Vista x64 and was updated to Windows 7 Pro with official DVD from Sony. I have had the need to reinstall Windows 7 Pro at least on two other occasions and always starting from the recovery Vista partition.
This time I decided to reinstall Windows 7 x64 (Ultimate) from original MS retail DVD as a clean install and always starting fro the recovery partition on my C:\ drive.

Everything seem to have installed properly with the exception of the Base System Device Driver, which, according to Device Manager, it's not installed, consequently the SD stick is not working.

I have downloaded the driver from Vaio website (Memory Devices for WIndows 7 x64).
After the install, the system tell me the installation was not successful and should try again.
After the second attempt, the system tell me that the driver that I am trying to install is for Vista OS. This procedure I tried many time with no difference.

I have contacted Vaio (US/Canada) and Microsoft Techies - All were unable to suggest a workable solution.
I feel lost in cyberspace Any suggestions?
    Appreciate the help

Is this the file you downloaded?
Did you try right clicking it and run as Administrator?
Were you sure everything was closed and no programs running?

    Hi Ferrit,
Yes, that is the correct file.
Yes, as you suggested I have run it as administrator (not done in the previous attempts)
Yes, no other program was running.
No difference. Same as before after the second attempt, the system comes back with the notification that that driver is only for Vista.

    Open to any suggestions. TKS

I was wondering how exactly you went from the original Vista 64 to
Windows 7 PRO from Sony to Windows 7 Ultimate that you installed with?
Did you buy this dvd? Cause thats a expensive upgrade for a sony laptop.

Originally the Vaio came with Vista x64 with offer from Sony of free upgrade to Win 7 Pro x64. I opted in.
Recently, I needed to reinstall Windows, so, I started with reinstalling Vista from the recovery partition and installed the numerous upgrades (as one does) (on this machine and over the years I must have done it 2-3 times), on this occasion however, I have decided to install Win 7 x64 Ultimate from an original retail DVD I have had around the house, instead of using the original OEM upgrade DVD from Sony.
As expected, everything seem to work well with the exception of the Base System Device Driver that Device Manager tells me it is not installed and failed in my numerous attempts to install.

I hope this helps, frankly I fail to see the difference between the PRO and the Ultimate and it would pain me to start all over to end up with Win 7 x64.

    Tks

Speaking strictly on a software basis there is a number of significant differences between PRO and Ultimate.
Speaking strictly on installing it to the sony there is none.
This driver should install. It apparently does not for whatever reason.
I wonder if you could use an extraction program (7zip,winrar etc etc) and extract the file to a folder and then manually install it?

Considering the date of this thread I'm sure it has already been resolved. But just in case . . although you talked to the folks at Vaio, have you installed the latest BIOS? Just a thought . ..
