Disable writing to flash drive
Hello !
One of my clients was asked to disable the ability of writing to flash disks on some of his office computers.
The problem is that on some of the computers there is an EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE connected for backup, And I don't want to disable the ability to write to it - I just want to disable the ability to write to flash disk.
Someone told me there is ability to do it through Norton and McAfee internet security, But I use avg free which is light on resources.
Is there a simpler way to do it ?
Thank you

One way to do it would be to connect all external backups via eSATA, and then disable USB removable storage devices in the Windows registry.

Thank you spy, But it'll be too much of a hassle, because none of the external drives has esata connector, and it wont allow me to use 2 usb flash drives for offsite backups

If you Google-> disable writing to usb
You'll find tons of stuff.
Maybe you can come up with a different way to do backups...

As I understood, disabling access to USB connections can't be a solution, because there is an external hard drive that is used by this type of connection. Though you can try using SpywareDr's advice.

You can use a group policy to restrict access to removable storage. Have the server do the backups and the problem is solved.

Thanks guys for your input.
What I did is just disabled usb on the computers who didn't needed to use it for backup.
I wonder if it possible to lock writing to usb that will password dependent (Will allow write only with password). Maybe this can make this happen :
