    Ssd hard drives

I am confused as to the selection of ssd, for instance crucial do a M100 also M500 AND THEN M550 type, the 550 being the most expensive, it is obviously faster but how and is it worth the extra money? not looking at crucial in particular, would just like to know is there a big difference?

A lot of the higher priced drives use better quality chips and have a much higher Mean Time Before Failure or MTBF and faster performance. If you run database type applications or do a lot of encoding it will be more hard drive intense so you want a drive that can handle all the read/writes without failing. Similarly if you need speed then a higher performance drive is better. All the SSD's will have a performance increase over old spindle technology so the higher performance drives with better MTBF's are usually only needed in the situations described above otherwise save your money and get a good price like that MX100.

There is also it would appear a bit of an issue with some systems not being able to recognize
the controller. For example my son uses a mac for his digital audio recording for his business.
We tried putting an ssd in it to replace the failing harddrive and the mac would not recognize it at all.
We have just gone to another controller to see if it will recognize it. It was a Sandforce
I will post the info when we know.
