I may have found a simple solution. The key can be extracted by installing win 8 and using this; http://superuser.com/questions/51390...ed-in-the-bios
Also this installed and activated for me just follow the directions: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/w...-refresh-media
The latter installed and activated on its own.

From all I got out of this the win 8.1 install media will also activate with 8.0 key. As far as I know none of this is illegal.

The usb media worked great. You don't need to install win8 and get the key at all as long as it is an OEM machine (HP, DELL, TOSHIBA) and so on with which came with win8 it will activate with the built in key and be win8.1 even if the key is for win8.0.
