    Not Genuine

Client became infected on Windows 7 Home Premium. Removed virus scanned for malware and made sure pc was clean. Now the system when it boots up, pop-up states this is not a Genuine version. Checked System properties, states it is activated. Have the COA key on tower but no way to put in the key again. Ran the Genuine Advantage tool and it just goes to the purchase page on the web. Some what confused why this has happened. Did a google search, lot of suggestions but none I see has worked. Any help would be appreciated.

Control Panel->System icon I believe is the place to reenter the key.

Another way to get there is to press [Winkey][Pause/Break], (or click the Start orb, right-click Computer and select Properties), then click the "Change product key" link at the bottom of the System screen.

If I activated Windows, why is Windows on my computer non-genuine?

Genuine Windows is a recurring process that checks your product key to ensure it's being used with the hardware it was paired with during activation. If the product key is found to be non-genuine, or not valid, it's likely that the product key is either being used on another computer or is counterfeit.

Thank you for the suggestions: This is a client's PC he has had for almost 4 years. I have already went to the system to change the key but there is no place to allow you to change the key. It has become apparent that most OEM's are this way, not sure why but does make it hard to change. ( Have not found out how.)

Sorry but as stated in my first post this is Home Premium. Some items are different in the various versions.

UPDATE: After doing more research, I was able to fin how to change the key. The following command is what to do:

    Click Start, type: CMD'

    Right click CMD

    Click Run as adminstrator

At the command prompt, type the following commands:

slmgr.vbs -ipk xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx (allows you to replace the current product key with the specified)

xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx - represents your product key

    Hit Enter on your keyboard

    Exit the command prompt

    Restart your computer

I will try this and post back once I get to the client's location at the begining of the week.

After running the DOS command, the key was successful changed. a couple days later the Not Genuine message came up again. The screen does not go black like others do. In the end, the system will probably have to be reinstalled to correct the problem. For right now though, the client says he can live with it as he just clicks it closed and it stays gone until the next boot. Thank you for the help.
