In short - You can't. aka there isn't an upgrade path that will save your apps etc...

You could add another drive and purchase win 7 and dual boot.... Or wipe the current drive and install 7.

I have upgraded an Acer laptop from XP to Vista, then upgraded Vista to 7. PITA but it did work. "It" meaning Windows worked okay. Many of the little programs that worked on XP no longer worked on 7 however. Microsoft's PowerToys are one example.

I tried the Win 7 but gave me an error telling me it could download Win 7 due to it was installed by Manufacturer..
I'm doing this crazy thing due to Turbo Tax will not support XP..I was able to install Turbo Tax, but was getting errors while using it..

Press [Winkey][Pause], (or click Start, right-click Computer and select Properties), and to the right of "System type:" it'll tell you whether it's a 32-bit or 64-bit of Windows.

    Are you using Windows 7?

Something else you can try is to click Start, type in msinfo32 and press [Enter]. In the right pane, to the right of "System type:" mine says "x64-based PC".
