I'm having to fight my natural smart-*** tendencies really hard here, but panhead, I might suggest you download the current driver from HP's website.
Always nice to be reminded that I'm not the only one who suffers the occasional braincramp.

All smart-*** tendencies are welcome, but I had done that already. Those drivers are old and give the same results. What I do not understand that the printer works normally with another, old W2000 PC. Beats me.

I would suggest trying this: Hit the start button, then the run command, and type services.msc in the box. Look and see if the spooler service is running, I saw that bork up a machine a few times.

If you didn't see any errors installing the printer, the next thing I'd try (after Guts' suggestion) is running System File Checker. If that doesn't flag and fix any problems, I would guess that you may have some software conflict on the machine perhaps. You can try running Process Monitor to help identify points where the printing process may be hanging.

If the printer shows under printers try this:
-delete any jobs that are in the queue of the printer, then reboot
-replace the driver used by the printer with the "universal" HP LJ 6L (printer properties, advanced tab, new driver, manufacturer HP, model Laserjet 6L)
-try to print, it may take a bit to spool and print - up to 2 min
-if success create a new printer which goes to the same port and manually choose the 5050 driver (repeat the procedure used for installing the LJ 6L, do not run the driver installer from HP!!!)
-try printing a test page on the new printer.
If it doesn't show anywhere you may need to do some manual cleanup of the registry in the USB devices area...

I tried to install a HP Photosmart printer by connecting the USB cable, which gave no problems, the printer was recognized. I then did the same with the 5505 (same USB port) and surprise: the printer was recognized and the drivers were installed. It now works (but I still don't understand....).
Thank you for all replies and suggestions!

It works now doesn't it Panhead?
Sometimes windows gets in a rut, installing another printer junked the previous info about it, so when you installed the 5505 again, it started from scratch and recognised it properly.

Yes, it works. Maybe it's better not to know why it didn't work at first.

Intel Mod
Computers can be the strangest things!
I was updating a BIOS yesterday, and the system flat-out refused to recognise the presence of the ROM file on floppy disk or CD. Then for no apparent reason after about a quarter hour of recalcitrance, it suddenly said reading ROM file, and flashed the BIOS (successfully...)
??
I'm happy too!
