IBM ThinkPad T20
I recently installed windows 2000 on ThinkPad T20 and all settings are correct. However, I user is complaining that his laptop is freezing up after operating for 3-4 hours. The machine gets hot and the mouse freezes, control-alt-delete doesn't work. He has to shut down, unplug the power and restart 20 minutes later after the machine cools down. Also, he mentioned this problem was not happening before windows 2000 was installed. I have no clue why this is happening. Can you please give some advise how to fix this laptop?
thanks

IBM recomends installing the latest bios before installing 2000 and then updating all the drivers.

something to think about... when a system goes threw a major change e.g. upgrading to win 2000 you will run into all the mechanicle failures then.. its just like a wake up call and huge scan of internal parts and then is when the computer is most picky on what is broke and what it will use... not to mention 2000 is a supposed to be a stabel program for more of like a networking kinda guy to operate it... so it might have a built in fail safe for processor degree's, i dont know that much about win 2000 but these are some idea's that might spike up a solution with the other people on the boards that might have a better idea or have experianced it.. but yea i recoment upgrading the bios as well. i do that when ever i can either way due to some bios's do not support certain hardware... so its worth downloading the flash just to insure good running condition "preventitive maintenance" if you will.
good luck,
ken
it wuzznt me! it was da one armed man!! i swear!! all the damn time!

Well, first I hope you made certain that all drivers were updated. Second, it sounds like the cpu fan is failing. Especially with the entire laptop heating up. I'd talk to IBM to have it sent in for repairs. It's possible that Win 2k is stressing the processer more, and combined with an untimely death of the fan, could be your problem. If possible, have him check the fan when the computer heats up. See if it's spinning at all. Really sounds like a hardware issue though.

Any laptop will get hot when the CPU is put under constant load (but not usually hot enough to cause problems, just to make it uncomfortable to put on your lap. Check to see if there is anything running in the background that is sucking up all the CPU time. Turn on power management if it isn't already.
