    Post WindowsUpdate

Ok. I admit it. I'm a slacker. I love the convienence of getting my computer scanned and a web site telling me what I need to download to stay on "par" with the latest patches. That's why I use windowsupdate.com. Here's my problem though...

A few weeks back Micro$oft had a problem with windowsupdate.com. (Thier server was down...go figure.) Anyway, my dumba$$ decides to go there and have a look around and see how bad thier site was crashed. Well, it was pretty bad. As a matter of fact, I think it dorked something up on my machine. Ever since then, I have not been able to use windowsupdate.com correctly.

Most of the time it will get up to where it's scanning for new updates and will just hang there at 0% forever. Sometimes the browser window "loses" it's buttons and totally freaks out.

I've tried all the normal fixes to no avail. I've deleted cached pages, cleared my history, and I even (after a while) deleted the "update" object under tools-->internet options-->Temp Int Files-->Settings-->View Objects. (I remeber this being a fix for windowsupdate.com issues with older versions of windows and thought it would help here, but it didn't)

Anyway, this is frustrating and I don't want to have to reload IE6 just because of this. Does anyone out there have a simple solution to this? Any help is appreciated.

Unless you've done major sftwe or hdwe changes since that time several weeks ago, see if you have a restore point somewhere before the trouble started.

The restore will probably do the trick [if you still have a time/date before your machine started messing up], but you will lose major system changes if you've done any.

They say personal files will remain intact, but I make it a point to back those up before using restore.

I hadn't thought of that one. But, I suppose it's been so long and I tinker so much with system settings, I'd probably just want to install IE 6 again before I did that. It's a shame that didn't come to my mind first thing. Of course I just thought what the site was still "dorked up" when the problem was still fresh. I've done too much stuff since then. Now that I think about it, I've done so much just about anything could be an issue. I'll probably just end up re-loading IE6 and be done with it. No big deal, just a security download or two to get IE6 back up to "par".

Thanks for the input and sorry for the nearly "impossible to figure out" post.

May not be your machine. every system I've worked on over this past week had had troubles with windowsupdate site. be it 95, 98, 98se, nt4 2k, me or xp. All have either timed out waiting for the site to respond, or have been dog slow grabbing any files off the site.

Oh...that's important information. Thanks DamnedAngel. Perhaps they are just still having "difficulties". Figures.

I guess the question now is: Is it even possible for WindowsUpdate to have dorked anything up? I have to wager a guess that the answer is "no". I think I'll sit back and see what happens.

For now, I guess I'll just have to be pro-active and surf the Microsoft.com website to look for patches. Suck.
