yeah when I goto some a friend brings his 24 port 10 baset switch
You only use no more than 1 mb of the switch, you only want a faster switch for file swapping.

Most broadband internet conections are about 1.5 Mb/sec so 10 will be better. But with the dropping prices of 100 Mb switches why bother with 10? I am trying to sell two 16 port rackmount 10/100's now $100 each. And at 100 Mb there is NO lag, even with 20-30 machines going.

Another vote for going 100Mbps on this.
It will be a looooong time before you need to upgrade to anything else.

10Mb Switch is more than enough for Lan-Gaming.
The data stream between the Peers is very light.
It sends DATA (not Graphics).
Cheers,

Not only will 10 Mb file transfers annoy your guests, but it will send pings way up.
As long as you tell everyone to not transfer and files, then 10 Mb will do just fine.

The switch allows for dedicated bandwidth between two points. I could see it going up if your pulling files from the hosting server.
If the price difference isn't much, I'd go with a 100Mb too. Get a nice Cisco 2900

All switches have total bandwidth limitations (how much can pass through the switch backbone at any one point in time). So if you try to excede that limitation, then yes, pings will go up. This limitation is of course much higher on 100Mb switches.
