SB PCI128 with HP pavilion 9600CTO

    Hi
I am having problem sound card, or should I say with HP computer.
I have Pavilion 9600 CTO and SB PCI128 that came with PC. I am trying to connect microphone. BUT THERE IS NO MICROPHONE JACK!!!
I have searched manual from creative lab web site. it looks totally different. According to their manual, there should be 4 ports; headphone, speaker, microphone, MIDI
But I only have headphone, speaker and MIDI!
    What is going on?

By the way the sound card is recording alright. I have tested with USB connected microphone (microphone from webcam).

I do need to connect additional microphone using regular microphone input jack, becaues the mic on the web cam is not working whenever I am using microsoft messenger.
    My os is Window 98SE.
    Please help!

Can you describe the colors and associated labels for the connectors on your sound card? This is what creative says you should have, which I assume you don't. It was not unusual for the oem versions of these cards to be modified or to actually be slightly different models. Can you identify a model number (a four digit number preceded by CT or ES) on the sound card?

    Thanks

    Purple for headphone
    Blue for (powered) speaker
No color but with triangle symbol for big round port (look like mouse port, maybe MIDI?)

As for the model number I did open the case of PC but to look for the number I have to disassemble Fan and other big box in front of it.

Is this a pci card or integrated into the mother board? You should be able to remove a pci card w/o disassembling any fans. Remove screw or clip at rear of pc and pull card straight up. Make sure power cord is disconnected from pc.

Have you confirmed that the purple jack is actually a headphone jack? It is also possible that it is dual function controlled by a jumper.

It is a PCI card and the problem is the fan is right in front of it. And there is not much gap to pull out the sound card. According to creative lab, the model number should be CT4700, Ct4751 or CT4750.

For the purple jack, I have tried with mic. but it is not working.
Thank you so much for your replies.

    9600 CTO Features and Specifications

For your Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audio PCI 128, it lists Supported inputs: MIC, Line In , Line Out, Speaker Out, MIDI/ joystick. This adds up to five ports...hmmm.

Also, as an FYI, Taking Apart the Computer for Upgrade or Service

    EDIT: Resolving Microphone Problems
The colors of the microphone connectors are usually yellow or pink.

Aye, should be. In addition to the sb pci128, Creative also marketed the sb pci64, sb audio pci, sb vibra 128, and ensoniq audio pci, all of which were basically the same card. They also made oem versions w/ the same name that had different model numbers. According to Creative:

Once you have identified the model or chipset number, you can download drivers here. Following is a list of model numbers.

    Creative Ensoniq AudioPCI (CT4810, CT4811, CT4812, CT4815 and CT4816)
    Vibra 128 (CT4810, CT4811, CT4812, CT4815 & CT4816)
SB PCI 64 with the 1370 or 1371 chipset *
    SB PCI 128 (CT4700) with the 1370 or 1371 chipset *
    SB PCI 128 (CT4750/CT4751)
    * There are no driver updates for PCI 128 (CT4700) and PCI 64 cards based on the ES1370, ES1371 and ES1373 Chipsets for Windows Me/2000/XP - you must use the drivers built into these operating systems.

If you have a PCI 128/Vibra 128/PCI 64 soundcard that has either one of the following CT model numbers or chipset numbers, contact the PC manufacturer for drivers:

    CT2515
    CT2518
    CT58xx
    550x where x is a number between 0 and 9
IMO, if HP marketed the system as having a mic jack, then they ripped you off. You could try getting them to send you a new card (not likely, given the age of the system). Alternatively, you could buy a new sound card for under $20.
