He really loved nature and his enthusiasm really showed through.

He could be holding the ugliest, hairiest, scariest tarantula or snake or whatever and then he would say, "Look at her. Isn't she gorgeous?"

    RIP

While it's sad, it really is no surprise. Hopefully his legacy of enthusiasm will be tempered with keeping a little more distance.

A great loss to the enviromentalist and animal rights movements, one of the most charismatic and enthusiastic advocates they had. You had to like the guy and respect his courage.

I feel terrible for his wife and two kiddos, although I suspect they will continue in the same vein at the Australia Zoo, with his parents. I always suspected he would get it from one of the beasties he so loved to wrestle, but not in a freak accident.

The documentary he was working on at the time was dealing with a number of highly venomous creatures including box jellyfish and blue-ringed octopus. But at the time of his death he was doing some side filming of general sea life in the area for a childrens educational project. He was on camera at the time of the attack and the footage has been examined by police - Steve swam above the ray which was presumably startled. It struck upward and its barb broke off having penetrated Steve's chest. He was able to pull the barb out before he died.

Yesterday was strange for me with news of heart-related deaths. Colin Theile, an Australian author, whose books I remember from my childhood, died of a heart attack yesterday (at an advanced age...)

Then for some reason I decided to search for any information on J Madison Wright, the little lass who played the character of True Danziger in Earth 2. I knew she had a heart transplant in 2000 at age 15. I was saddened to discover she also died of a heart attack several weeks ago at age 21, just after returning from her honeymoon!

Sad news for eveyone, including us adrenalin junkies. I really enjoyed his shows. He was one of the few real people on TV, and I for one will miss him. Best wishes to his grieving family.
