[RESOLVED] Question about the Home and Pro version of XP

ok i was looking at xp on the microsoft website and it said that the pro version of XP was the same as the home version of XP but it had added features.

So if I install the Pro version will i have all of the same features as the home version with added security or will they take out some of the other features that are inculded in the home version?

Can anyone clear this up for me. Thanks

Pro has ALL of the features of home and then some.

Most you will not be interested in, but the important ones are:

Dual Proc Support
NTFS Permissions
Can be Joined to a Domain

I've had no problems with any game I've tried to run under XP Pro, in fact, most run better than they did under 2K. The only game related issue is some games that use 3D sound have an "echo" to them using the default SB Live drivers (and the ones from the Windows Update site). Hopefully, Creative will release a set of drivers that corrects this around XP's launch time, but until then, it can be worked around by disabling sound hardware acceleration.

Think of it as XP Pro and XP Pro Lite (Home Edition). The home user still gets a lot more features than ever before but nothing too overwhelming. XP Pro and XP Home Edition aren't the same in comparison as 2k Pro is to 9x/ME. They are actually almost identical - a novice would have a hard time distinguishing them apart.

The remote assistance in the Pro version is most excellent. The Home Edition has a watered-down version of Remote Assistance which allows others, your buddies, techs, or even MS support to give you assistance.

I've tested both versions, and I've noticed that the Home Edition does run noticeably faster, but this is to be expected, as there is a lot less features available to be running in the background, such as IIS. Both have the familiar 2K Administrative Tools in the Control Panel, but the Home Edition has far less features.

Also, I've noticed that hardware installations are different in both versions. It's possible that the Home Edition I tested was an earlier build than the Pro version I'm comparing it to, but I noticed I was given less options when XP detected new hardware in the Home Edition.

since the home and Pro versions are quite similar and use a similar kernel (i think), will i have the same problems installing and running Home Ed as i have had with Pro?

i have a fairly decent spec PC (MSI 6330 mobo, latest bios, 1.2 athlon, 256MB, 30gigs, Creative Geforce 2mx 32mb, soundblaster 128) and i just cannot get the thing to run properly (XP Pro 2600)

(1) Installation was a bitch, crashed after file copy section, finally after many attempts it installed. clean install on a new partition btw. too many errors to mention, "cant find file", "bad hd" etc.

(2) when it finally installed and booted up, 70% of the time it crashed just before the desktop with a blue screen of death, only way to get into XP Pro was to boot with the enable VGA option. sounds like a dislike to my video card, but installed the latest xp detonators and the problem still applies. i was advised to disable x4 AGP, i did, but this didn't help in the end. cant find no mention on the creative site.

(3) the same copy of XP Pro installed first go on my inferior 400mhz laptop and runs without a hitch.

(4) doesn't seem to be a mobo conflict, have read thru the MSI forum and no one reports any issues with the 6330 K7TPro and XP Pro.

i run (ran?!) a dual boot with Win98SE and Win2KPro (exact same problems as with XPPro), removed Win2K and "installed" XP Pro.

XP Home should have the same problems as pro.

They are basically the same code base, but with different features and settings. Home has a smaller footprint because it doesn't have all of the AD and GP stuff.

Very true, very true. Though home does include that its just a little more limited, and someone sitting at the box has to request it. On a pro box, you can TS into it whether someone is logged on or not...

problem sorted (i hope). i read somewhere that it was advisable to set the bios to defaults before installing, which i did, and XP now works like a charm, no crashes, and now seems to love my Creative GeForce 2MX

one problem still remains, which i had on the old install. the luna desktop option has now disappeared (it was there at the start)from the "windows and buttons" option in appearance, i only get "windows classic style". i fixed this before as the theme files in the resources folder had corrupt filenames, but this time round with a good install, the filenames are intact, but the problem remains.
