Go into the BIOS and see if the integrated sound somehow got disabled. If it's jumper-controlled, check inside the system to see if something is laying across the jumper terminals.
If your Compaq is still under warranty, let the vendor worry about it!

If the sound has well and truly died, you should be able to disable the onboard system, uninstall the drivers and install a seperate sound card to take its place.
Seriously, good luck.

Unhappy

I have no sound the message is that Sound Max has detected that headphones are connected to the front panel headphones jack. You will not hear audio from the speakers while headphones are connected. The problem is we don't have headphones or a front panel headphone jack....Could you please tell me what to disable or unplug????? What to do!!! I tried almost everything.

Welcome to Windrivers Priscilla.

First of all lets try the obvious... assuming this is Windows XP. Start, control panel... when it opens, switch to classic view using the link on the left.

Click on sounds and audio devices - click on the audio tab. There are 3 drop down boxes with "default device" next to it... Do they all say Soundmax?
Now flip back to the volume tab - under the speaker section, click the advanced button - what speaker configuration has been selected.

Are you speakers powered on and plugged into the green socket at the back of the computer? (this assumes you just have two speakers)
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."
