pci.sys missing or corrupt

please can someone help i have just brought a toshiba satellite 4080xcdt (a bit old i know but hey) and when booting it says sorry for the inconvenience windows can not load due to pci.sys missing or corrupt. Now i have attempted to fix by putting in a copy of xp but when i get to the windows set up screen there is no option to choose from and the cd does work! Can anyone please help me to get this problem sorted thankyou in advance

If that copy of xp doesn't include SP2 you will get that error message as well. Doesn't the Toshiba have a restore partition you can boot from?

Sorry i. Dont know what a partition is and do you mean that the xp cd has to be for a p2 ? Thankyou

A partition is a prepared part of the hard drive. On branded pcs and notebooks, often there is a hidden partition which has the files to restore the pc/laptop to its original factory state. Often this is called the recovery partition and is accessed by hitting an F key such as F12 when the machine first starts.

Have a look at Toshiba support here Click on the user guide tab and see how to restore it to factory condition.

Assuming you get XP on this laptop, you will need to max out the ram to 192mb... but it is going to be so slow as to be useless with a PII 366 processor. You would be wayyy better of putting 98se on it... or possibly windows 2000, but not XP.
